Catechism – Paragraph #1324

Do Catholics eat Jesus?

Catechism Meditation:

The Eucharist is “the source and summit of the Christian life.”  No. 1324

REFLECTION.  The Eucharist is our font and our apex because from it flows all else: all the grace by which God forgives us and saves us; all the faith and hope and love with which He imbues us; all the power and authority and ability He gives us to turn from sin and follow Him, to pursue His righteousness, to love and minister to others. All the preaching, all the teaching, all the ministry, all the fellowship are subsumed to the Eucharist because without the Eucharist we could have none of those. It is the source of our life; our very food from heaven.

In the book, Day by Day with the Catechism, Peter A. Giersch says… “The ancients spoke of “ambrosia,” this food of the gods that gave immortality to mortals if they could eat it. In the Eucharist we share not just food of the gods but food that is God. All of the power and wisdom and strength contained in the divinity of Christ becomes a part of us as we partake in the heavenly banquet.”

PRAYER.  Lord, help me to come to a deeper belief and a fuller understanding of the gift you give us of Yourself in the Eucharist.

Timeless Wisdom Quote:

“He who later on called Himself ‘the Living Bread descended from Heaven’ was born in Bethlehem – which in Hebrew means ‘house of bread.’ And He was laid in a manger – a place of food – as if to show us that as we have bread for our bodies, so He would be the Bread of our souls.” Venerable Fulton J. Sheen
